Summer Internships!

This summer PVPLC has several volunteer intern opportunities for students. I've attached the program description, intern application, and position descriptions for you to disperse to your students, or a student that you know. Not all of these involve sciences, we have other discipline opportunities. Also, the information can be found on PVPLC's website on the Jobs & Internships webpage at: http://www.pvplc.org/jobs.shtml.

Geology Intern (there's a possibility that funds are available for this position, which is a one year commitment)

Naturalist at the George F Canyon Center

We are interested in upper division or graduate students, however the Geology Intern is open to high school and also lower division students as well.

Last Events of semester THIS WEEKEND!

I know this is the final stretch of the semester -- so i wanted to give all those who are suffering, a bright shining light at the end of the tunnel. Here are the last club events of the semester:

THIS SATURDAY, May 22nd -- from 10AM-10PM is the GREEN LONG BEACH FESTIVAL! This is a great way to connect with the community that we belong to and also have a lot of fun! There will be lots of bands, guest speakers, and environmental education workshops throughout the entire event. Check out more info about the event: Greenlb.org -- The Environmental Club is listed as one of this year's 2010 festival hosts!

We still need a lot of help during the day of the festival!! So if you have time to volunteer -- please, please, please e-mail glbvolunteer@gmail.com or reply to this e-mail. There will be a special volunteer meeting this friday, May 21st @ 10AM (430 E. 1st Street).

THIS SUNDAY, May 23rd -- is the rescheduled MALIBU BEACH SAFARI event to celebrate public beaches with signwatching, trailblazing the public-private boundary, and a public easement potluck.
Where: Come to the public beach accessway between 22140-22126 Pacific Coast Highway (~.5 mis west of Carbon Canyon Rd. and ~1 mi. east of Malibu pier). Park on either side of the PCH (cross with caution), and walk through the accessway to the beach. (Or take the 534 PCH bus!--nearest stop is Carbon Canyon Rd.-- www.metro.net.) Please allow for plenty of time to find a parking spot, since availability of beach parking is unpredictable.
When: Choose 1 of the 3 start times (each lasts ~1 3/4 hrs). 9am, 11:30pm, and 2pm.

Rangers should arrive at the base of the accessway (on the beach--look for the uniform) to assemble each safari at least 15 minutes in advance of each start time. If you arrive early, you can walk on the wet sand anywhere, and on the dry sand (at least 10 ft. from the houses) on the FIRST 4 PROPERTIES TO THE LEFT (downcoast). Please do not use the dry sand upcoast or elsewhere.
Bring: Snack for the potluck (just for you), water if you need it, sun protection, and extra layer for warmth.
Please note: No bathroom available at meeting point--Try the fast-food restaurants just upcoast on the PCH.

Green Long Beach Festival Volunteers NEEDED!

Hey all you Greenies,

This year's Green Long Beach Festival is right around the corner (May 22nd) -- and we still need a lot of volunteers to help out with the event. This event is designed to bring together the many groups and individuals who work to make Long Beach a more sustainable city. From businesses to non-profits to government entities to community groups, everyone is welcome to be a part of this community event.

We want CSULB and the Environmental Club to be a part of this festival -- so volunteer, invite your friends & family to attend the festival. This is a great way to connect with the community that we belong to and also have a lot of fun! There will be lots of bands, guest speakers, and environmental education workshops throughout the entire event. If you're interested -- I can send you the schedule of events. I'm attaching the volunteer form -- please fill it out and e-mail it back to me, or glbvolunteer@gmail.org
We need the following volunteers in the shifts below:
7:00AM – 11:00AM
11:00AM – 3:00 PM
3:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Reminder: This upcoming Tuesday, May 18 from 7-8 p.m., There will be a meeting discussing the Festival at the Neighborhood  Resource Center *425 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach 90802*. Meeting will start 7 p.m. exactly, so please arrive early to allow time for parking. Some parking available in the back of the building, biking, busing and carpooling is encouraged.
We will be discussing:
   - mission and purpose
   - run-through of festival
   - point person for vendors, volunteers, general inquires, etc.
   - how we can help each other through a shared network
   - distribute programs (if available)
***All volunteers should attend this meeting.

Pre-Finals Yoga Class (FREE)

Hello ES&P Members,

 

  Back by popular demand is our Pre-Finals Yoga class which is to be held during our regular meeting time on Tuesday between 12:30pm-1:30pm.  We all have papers, presentations, and finals coming up and times are stressful and fast paced.  So take an hour and relax while getting a great stretch in!   Our instructor is Lisa Behrendt who teaches yoga classes through the fitness programs at CSULB.  Her method of teaching is balanced, catering to the needs of your body and mind.   This class will be geared towards the beginner level so anyone who hasn't done yoga, don't be discouraged.   Those of you who have practiced before or are in practice, we encourage you to come and enjoy a relaxing session.  Here are the details of the class:

 

Where:  Lawn area outside the lower level of the Union, next to the Beach Auditorium.

When:  12:30-1:30pm.  Come a few minutes before if possible to settle in

What to wear:  Comfortable clothes to move in

What to bring:  Water, sunglasses (we will be outside).  Yoga Mats will be provided

     If you want to get more involved with the club next year, here is your chance!  Officers and committee chairs for next year will be decided this Saturday, May 15th in the morning.  If you are interested in any of the positions, please email us ASAP, so we can give you the details.  If you cannot make this time, but are still interested, email us explaining which position(s) you are considering and include your phone number so we can talk with you.  There will not be a big formal vote or anything, just some people getting together and working out who would fit which position best.  If you have any questions, or if you want to get involved, but are not sure which position is best for you, just send us an email!

Last Official Meeting: Special Presentations

The end of semester is quickly approaching -- and we still have a few more treats for everyone!

This Tuesday, May 4th (12:30-1:30 USU-350) we're having special presentation from all the club officers and committee chairs. AND we'll be announcing the steward award for the semester. This will be the last official club meeting for the semester.

If you are interested in being an officer/committee chair next year, please come to this meeting!  The current officers and committee leaders will be giving a short presentation about what each position involves.  To be an officer/committee leader next year you need to let us know at this meeting, or by email in the next week or two!  The meeting will be short, so that we can answer questions and talk more with those of you interested. 

Next week we'll have our traditional pre-finals yoga session! Our meeting room is obviously too small to accommodate a full yoga class -- so we'll be meeting downstairs on the lawn. Specific location will be sent out asap.

Lastly, the month of May is Long Beach's Bicycle month! See the post below for more info.

MAY 2010 - Long Beach Bike Month - Get ready to ride!!

National Bike Month with a full month of cycling activities. Including CSULBcyclists "ride you wanna be on" -- on Wednesday night, the Long Beach Bike Festival this coming weekend (May 7th-9th), and of course you can stop by the H.U.B bike co-op open Fri-Mon every week. Garden Committee gets meeting with President Alexander!

Hi Everyone,

An Update from the Garden Committee.  Tomorrow 5/3 there will be a meeting at 6pm in the Sunset Lounge of USU to discuss a turn of events!... - thanks to Sabrina, we were able to schedule a meeting with CSULB President F King Alexander THIS SEMESTER.

I know the semester is ending fast, but let's try to keep the momentum going. So come to the meeting tomorrow, and we'll talk about when/where and what we'll be presenting to President Alexander.

Special Events THIS WEEK!

Hi Everyone,

Again, I really want to thank everyone for participating, volunteering, and getting involved during Earth week. It was a huge help and pleasure seeing all of you guys who came out to celebrate the week with us and generate support for environmental education.

A few important events going on this week:

For our club meeting tomorrow (USU-305 from 12:30-1:30pm), we will be having a special presentation by our very own -- Geoff Leech. He won the Innovator Award for fall09 with the Friends of Colorado Lagoon. He spent the entirety of last semester gathering data on trash in the Colorado Lagoon, and he will be sharing his findings with us. Come listen to the environmental impact of an urban setting on the restoration of the lagoon -- and how you can make a difference in your community!  (also -- pizza provided)

This Wednesday, April 28th is LBCC's Earth festival from 11-3pm. They're kicking it off with Aztec Dancers followed by a Drum Circle for the Love of Mother Earth -- featuring organic foods, green vendors, eco-friendly products & alternative energy demonstrations. The event will be held at the Nordic Lounge and Quad/lounge -- and it's open to the entire community. So if anyone has a break -- or a class over at LBCC this wed -- make sure to check it out! (i'm attaching the flier)

The semester isn't over yet -- and we have a few more things planned to keep the momentum going. There's always ways to get involved!
