Fwd: Fw: Join Us Saturday for the Largest Volunteer Day on the Planet

Hey all,

This is a great opportunity for you guys to start getting involved with environmental issues in the community. It is part of California Coastal Cleanup Day being put on by Heal the Bay. It will not be an official club event as most (if not all) of the officers have made plans/prior arrangements and thus cannot go, but we strongly encourage anyone interested to go and help out!

Best,
Nick Thibeault
President

Coastal Cleanup Day, Sept. 15, 2012
Tired of trash? So are a lot of other Southern Californians, which is why we band together each September to  help rid our local beaches, rivers, parks and streets of debris.

Whether you want to pick up trash in Abalone Cove in Palos Verdes or at Wisdom Academy for Young Scientists on Manchester Avenue, we have a cleanup site for you.

You won't need any special training or equipment However, Heal the Bay encourages volunteers to go Zero Waste and bring their own buckets, reusable bags and gloves to pick up trash. After all, we are an environmental group!

And if you want to get really gonzo about cleaning up, we need you at one of our Code Red sites, which are swamped with tons of rash and debris, such as plastic bags. Volunteers can make a huge impact at these locations, which this year include: Arroyo Seco, Dominguez Channel (Artesia Transit Center and Wilmington Marinas) and Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park.

Come to the Lake Balboa Park cleanup site in Van Nuys and meet this masked hombre.
Among the celebrities making an appearance at Coastal Cleanup Day will be Mexican luchador and pro-wrestler Blue Demon, Jr., who will take down trash at the Lake Balboa Park site in Van Nuys.

Additional highlights include a cleanup celebrating African American heritage at the historic Bay Street Beach in Santa Monica, sometimes known as the "Inkwell." The city beach site was a popular hangout for African Americans in Los Angeles County from the 1920s to the early 1960s, long after racial restrictions on public beaches were invalidated in 1927. Santa Monica Conservancy docents will be on hand to educate volunteers about the history of the site. Volunteers will also learn about environmental concerns at Bay Street Beach. Members of the NAACP, Black Surfing Assn. and L.A. Black Underwater Explorers will attend.

Plus, the first 100 people who volunteer at this site will receive a free ticket to the Jazz for the Environment Concert at EarthFest L.A. 2012 at 2 p.m. in Culver City at West L.A. College. Jazz for the Environment is headlined by double Grammy Award-winning smooth jazz legend, guitarist Paul Brown; chart topping contemporary jazz musician Darren Rahn, vocalist Wendy Moten; jazz fusion band DW3; and Motown-influenced singer/songwriter Chris Lightfoot.

To ensure that you won't get a sunburn, Neutrogena has generously donated enough sunscreen for each participant at Coastal Cleanup Day to take home a full-size bottle (while supplies last).

UMeTimeMobile service UMeTime is offering CCD volunteers an app that shares special rewards and offers from local businesses near cleanup sites in Venice and Santa Monica. Sign up to be notified of the app's launch.

Wait! There's more! Volunteers who clean the beach on 9/15 get free admission to our Aquarium. You read that right. Free!  No passes needed.
