Dear Long Beach Community Members and Organizations,

April is right around the corner, and that of course means Earth Week will soon be here. The staff at the Long Beach Office of Sustainability is beginning to compile a calendar of local events to be held throughout the week of Saturday April 21^st, 2012- Saturday April 28^th, 2012 in celebration of Earth Week. We are currently reaching out to organizations such as your own to find out what the local community can participate in. Once you have finalized your Earth Week event, we encourage you to email us the basic information to be featured on the calendar. This includes:

Organization(s) Name
Date and Time
Contact Info (Email, Website, Phone Number if applicable)
1-2 sentence summary of event.

Please submit this data no later than Friday, March 2^nd to brianna.pagan@longbeach.gov in order for your event to be included. The Office of Sustainability will then print and distribute the calendars throughout the city, so this is a great way to advertise and get event info out to the public.

Hike Cancelled

We're very sorry to announce that the Hike to Santa Ynez Falls tomorrow has been cancelled due to rain. Hiking the Santa Ynez Falls on November 20th

Hello Everyone,

With the recent success of our events during Eco-Fest, we have decided to plan another hike before the end of the semester on November 20th, 2011. Like before we will be meeting in lot 1 at CSULB to set up carpools at 8am and we will be leaving promptly at 8:30am. I have attached the description of the trail, note that the trail is an out-and-back type hike, about 6 miles and could take potentially around 4-5 hours to complete depending on how large our group is. Below are the directions and the trail description, taken from localhikes.com

Summary: This is a great hike into the dense and somewhat wild Santa Ynez Canyon. Just as you begin to descend the Santa Ynez trail, look to the left at a grassy knoll. Its not unusual to see deer feeding. A little further down the trail are some neat sandstone formations you can climb up on for a dramatic view of the mountains and ocean.

The last couple of hundred yards to the waterfall requires some climbing over boulders and one large slippery boulder has a rope to help you over. Once at the waterfall, the brave of heart can climb up a step face, with the assistance of a rope left in place, to get to the top of the falls. The shear walls of the deep cut canyon are quite spectacular.

Trailhead: From Topanga Canyon Boulevard, turn east on Entrada Road; that's to the left if you are coming from the San Fernando Valley. Follow Entrada Road by turning left at every opportunity until you arrive at Topanga State Park. The trailhead is at the end of the parking lot. (Lat:34.0928 Lon:-118.58707)

Eco-Fest

Hello Everyone,

This is just a friendly reminder to come out to Eco-Fest this week. On Tuesday night November 8th, from 8pm-10pm we have a movie screening with the movie Wall-E in the International House Dorms on campus. Then on Wednesday November 9th morning, we will have tabling from 11am-2pm on the friendship walk on campus, swing by to hang out with us or check out the other vendors which will be environmentally focused. Also, next week on Monday November 14th from 3pm-4:30, CSULB Green Campus will be hosting a green internship panel in the USU Ballrooms, check it out if you're interested in learning how to attain an internship in our field of study.

Please disregard the previous email, we will not be having a meeting tomorrow at 12:30pm, instead we just want to ask of you all to please attend as many of the Eco-Fest events as possible, if you wish to volunteer and help us out with any of the events, please send us an email.

Hello all,

ECO Fest is just around the corner, specifically this upcoming Wednesday on November 9, 2011! I have attached two documents to this email which include the directions to the campus and a map of the campus.

On the day of the event, please arrive on the campus by 10:15am to allow adequate time get situated and set up. Your free parking permit(s) may be picked up at the Visitor Information Center where you must state that you are present for ECO Fest and the name of the organization of which you are representing. The personnel may then direct you to the correct parking lot and or the loading dock. I will have a member of the Conservation Commission at the loading dock at 10am to 11am in case there is anything you would like to drop off so you won't have to drag all of your valuables across the campus.

Also, please reply to this email to confirm the amount of parking permits you require (limit two free parking permits per organization), the number of people who will be coming to represent your organization and their pizza preference (pepperoni/cheese/vegan). Light refreshments will be provided during the event while Zpizza's pizza will be provided for all organizations and their volunteers near the end of the event at 1:30pm.

Hike on Sunday October 23rd - Escondido Falls

Hello Everyone,

I hope your semester is going well and the stress of mid-terms has not gotten to you yet. We have a hike planned for Sunday October 23rd at Escondido Falls in Malibu, CA. We will have carpools set up on Sunday morning on campus at 8am, we will be meeting in Parking Lot 1 in front of the International House at CSULB, we will be leaving promptly at 8:30-8:45am, so if you want to carpool please do not be late. Here is a brief description below, along with the coordinates and directions to the trailhead if you prefer to drive yourself and meet us there, this place is about 30-45 minutes away from CSULB. If you get lost or are running a little late, you can call/text the President of the club Michael, his number is (714) 342-7782

Summary: This hike takes you to one of the gems in the Santa Monica Mountains, the spectacular multi-tiered Escondido Falls. The hike starts out on the pavement, passing million dollar homes along Winding Way with lovely ocean views. After about a mile, an obvious trail takes you down into the lovely Escondido Canyon, criss-crossing creek 4 or 5 times. As you approach the base of the lower falls, you can see the water dropping over the lip of the 150 ft upper falls in the distance. The lower falls are about 50 foot high and trickle over a moss covered wall into a lovely shallow pool. This is the turn around point for those not comfortable with a bit of rock scrambling.

To get to the upper falls, take the trail to the right of the lower falls up an obvious gully. At the top of the gully, go left and follow the stream over some small cascades and boulders to the base of the upper falls. This is an amazing site, with water tumbling over 3 or 4 tiers, finally falling into a deep pool.

Trailhead: From Kanan Road, drive south a mile or so on Pacific Coast Highway (1) to East Winding Way and turn left. The signed parking lot is on the left side of Winding Way. The trail actually follows the paved Winding Way for about a mile, after which you will see an obvious trail to the left. Follow the trail until it hits the stream, then just follow the trail upstream until you come to the lower falls. (Lat: 34.02594 Lon: -118.7839)

This week's meeting and a hike planned

Hey everybody!

For those of you that did not attend this week's small meeting, we had a relatively brief meeting. I have attached the minutes in a document.

We plan on going on a group hike October 22 or 23rd in the local mountains (location TBD). It will be a moderate and enjoyable hike - nothing too intense. If you would like to go, we would appreciate feedback to let us know which date works better for the majority of us. Please email us as soon as possible to let us know which one works for you and we will let you know what the consensus is soon.

Next week we hope to have a larger turn-out for our guest speakers - Brianna, Allie, and possibly Felix from Green Campus - will discuss what they're all about as well as their plans for the rest of the year and beyond. We hope to see you there!

Garage Sale!

In case you don't know, there will be a garage sale for our club THIS Saturday, October 1st, starting at 7am and running until about 1 pm, at Kyle's House. First meeting of the year!!

That time has gladly rolled around again, and we welcome new officers, tons of new members, and tons of returners! Welcome everyone to a new year of the CSULB Environmental Science and Policy club. I hope everyone is looking forward to a fun, fantastic, and productive new year!

Week of Welcoming Tabling and First Club Meeting

Hello Everyone,

I hope your labor day weekend was restful. Tomorrow September 7th and Wednesday September 8th, we will need volunteers to help the organization table to show new CSULB students what Environmental Science and Policy is all about, while collecting names and e-mails of those interested. Set-up and breakdown will be taken care of by the officers, however we do need some support in the middle times from 12-1 mainly, so if you're a member and you happen to swing by our table, stop in and say hi! We would greatly appreciate it.

Our first club meeting is Monday, September 12th at 12:30pm - 1:30pm in USU-306, light snacks will be provided. We will have the new director of Environmental Science and Policy there to introduce herself to the club.

SOAR Tabling with Green Campus at the Japanese Garden

Hello Everyone,

I hope you're all enjoying your summer, there is an opportunity to table for our organization and provide information for new students coming into the Fall semester. There will be club officers present at the table but any help you all can provide would be awesome. Please contact this email if you are available so we can assign you to a specific time. Here is the information below:

As students know SOAR is the mandatory orientation each new 49er must attend. There is an optional two-day SOAR, and Green Campus along with collaboration from the Japanese Garden and SOAR staff have created an evening event for those who choose the overnight orientation. The theme of the event is sustainability, and we want to feature on campus organizations that have shown interest in "going green" to table. Along with tabling there will be a live band, games, raffles, and a short movie in the setting of the beautiful Japanese Garden.

This is an amazing outreach opportunity since every student who attends the overnight SOAR will also have to attend the evening event. Every night 200 new students will be in attendance. There are three dates as follows:

June 30th (8pm-10pm)

July 11th (8pm-10pm)

July 21st (8pm-10pm)

Free Yoga Session Tuesday and Internship Deadline Extension!

Hello Wonderful Club Members!

Before we get all caught up in final exams, we would like to say thank you for a wonderful semester of support from you all with a free yoga session! This Tuesday (May 10th) from 12:30-1:30 in USU 305, yoga instructor, Gineeve, from the CSULB Rec Center, will be instructing a special session just for de-stressing us college students! Just bring a yoga mat (if you want), yourself, and some of your other stressed out friends, and prepare for a nice, relaxing, workout!

On another note, OurEarth.org is still looking for summer interns, so if you are interested in getting some environmental work experience this summer, please read below :)

OurEarth.org's Environmental Leadership Program offers students a rare opportunity to develop as leaders and learn many of the skills that are necessary for creating significant and long-term environmental impacts. In addition to leadership training, interns are on teams with students from other colleges and work on some of OurEarth.org's innovative environmental projects. Lastly, for added flexibility, all work is done remotely so interns have the option to work from their home, campus, or anywhere else, yet they will still have very frequent contact throughout the day with the OurEarth.org team and other interns via webinars, video and audio conference calls, and other electronic mediums.

Hello Everyone!

The time has finally come!!

Starting tomorrow Tuesday April 19th Earth Week will be in full swing!

Check out our events and come show your support. Remember, there will be no meeting this Tuesday... giving you the perfect opportunity to swing by our Environmental Awareness Fair on the Speakers Platform and/or attend the Green Internships meeting in BH-250! :)

Garage Sale and Earth Week next week!

Greetings Earthlings!

It is almost time to celebrate Earth Week! To start off, this Saturday (4/16) we will be having a Garage Sale fundraiser for the club and for our club member that decided to travel to Washington D.C. for the California Student Sustainability Coalition's (CSSC) event, PowerShift 2011! Any donations would be greatly appreciated. We really want to promote the three R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) - so please keep in mind: one person's trash can be another person's treasure. If you would also just like to sell something, and give some of the profits to the club or our club member, that would be fantastic, as well! If you are interested in donating/selling/buying at the garage sale, please reply to this email with your phone number and we will get in contact with you ASAP.

Also, we are creating a volunteer list for Earth Week, so if you are interested in helping out during any of the Earth Week events next week, please reply with available times. Don't forget to make announcements in your classes and forward emails to your friends and classmates with the Earth Week flier, so we can hopefully spread environmental awareness throughout the entire campus! Another reminder: no meeting next week, since we will be at the Earth Day Fair @ the speakers platform (come say hi and get a Earth Day temporary tattoo and a chance to win some freebies at our booth!).

Tomorrow's Habitat Restoration and and Important Petition Update

Hello Everyone!

Just a reminder that tomorrow morning (Saturday) from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM there will be the monthly habitat restoration event at Los Cerritos Wetland's Zedler Marsh! We will be meeting at the part of the marsh at the corner of Studebaker Rd. and 2nd St. Be sure to bring some water and friends, and we will meet you there!

Also, there is an error in the plastic water bottle ban petition, so please do not use the old petition when asking your classes for signatures. The revised version is attached to this email. Also, let us know if you do not mind sending a survey to any of your general education classes to help out the anti-plastic water bottle movement!

Happy Spring Break!

Both Earth Week and the end of the semester are quickly approaching, so we want YOU!

With the end of the school year, comes the end to the current officer positions. We will have an open discussion about new officer positions on April 12th, and hopefully decide on new officers by the last week of April, SO... if you are interested in being a club officer next year, let us know ASAP, and we can meet with you, answer any questions, direct you, etc. Don't be shy, and send us an email, even if you are curious - there may just be a perfect position for you, and we can help you figure that out. The club is only as strong as its members, but it still needs leaders to keep growing strong!

Help us Petition for a Cleaner Environment

Hello Everyone!

Attached are two petitions to help make CSULB more sustainable. If you are willing and able to print these out, pass these around, and make announcements in each of your classes we would be very appreciative! The first petition is for banning plastic bags on campus (mainly the ones at the food courts) and the second petition is for banning plastic water bottles (specifically the 49er/Go Beach! water bottles) and transition to hydration stations. We need to have as many signatures as possible by the end of April, possibly earlier, so we need help ASAP!

We also have a survey that goes along with the plastic water bottle ban/transition that we would like to have distributed to several general education classes. Please email us if you would be willing to send your general education class one of these short (about 6 questions) surveys.

**Important Note: In order to petition outside of class, you must get a free soliciting permit for the day from the Student Life and Development (SLD) Center in the USU. We want these petitions to be legitimate, so we want to do it the right way...which means daily permits for petitioning outside of class. (No permit is necessary if you petition during a class). Once the petitions are filled as much as you can get them, please let us know, and remember: make sure people are not signing more than once.

Beach Clean-Up this Saturday!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This Saturday March 19th we will be having our monthly Beach Clean-Up from 10am-12pm at the Belmont Pier!! (We will be meeting at the Belmont Pier in Long Beach on the sand at 10:00 AM and clean until 12ish). If you are available, you should come. =)

If you wish to carpool, definitely shoot us an email ASAP so you're not left behind. We can swing by campus to pick people up if needed ... so let us know!

Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Just bring yourself, close-toed shoes (we often encounter broken glass bottles in the sand), some H₂O and friends!

Urban Farm and Internship Meeting This Tuesday!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This Tuesday March 8th from 12:30-1:30pm in USU 305 we will have guest speaker, Joe Corso, Garden Director of Long Beach Organics, Inc., at the meeting to help us out with the Urban Farm and possible Community Garden on campus!

He will have several internship opportunities to share with us, from gardening, to publicity, even grant writing. For those interested in having an urban farm demonstration/community garden at CSULB, this will be incredibly important. You don't want to miss it!

Long Beach Organics (LBO) is a local non-profit dedicated to creating and maintaining community gardens in Long Beach. With their help, it will be VERY difficult for President Alexander to say no to the project. Let's get the ball rolling and the urban farm demo on campus! The more help, the better. Bring your friends, enjoy some free food, and help us make a difference!

Wetlands Clean-Up this Saturday!!

Hello All!

This Saturday (March 5th) we will be having our very first restoration clean-up with the Los Cerritos Wetlands from 10:30am-12:30pm! Meeting location will be
at the corner of Studebaker Rd. & 2nd St ()

The LCW Stewards & Aquarium of the Pacific are sponsoring the Zedler Marsh restoration planting events. Meaning, participants will be eligible to win a free ticket to the Aquarium and other prizes! For more information click here.

If anyone is interested in carpooling, let us know as soon as possible (via email). If there are enough people wanting to carpool, we will swing by campus to pick you all up.

Important Club Info and Amazing Opportunities to Pump Up Your Resume!

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to get all of the club members on the same page by giving you all an update about the club this semester. There is also two awesome new opportunities that might interest you, so read below for that!

Update:

So, in the club meetings this semester, we have decided to focus on three main goals to work together towards:

1.) Getting an urban farm on campus

2.) Banning plastic water bottles at CSULB (specifically targeting the Beach bottles)

3.) Banning plastic bags at all stores on campus.

During the meetings we have been forming groups, coming up with goals and tasks, and combining all of our resources to start taking action. If you are unable to make it to the meetings, but still want to help out, send us an email - we will need all the help we can get! I know several of you are used to meetings that are more relaxed, where you can just sit back and listen, - don't worry we will have guest speakers and time for that, still. Just imagine how awesome it will be by the end of all our hard work to say that we got an urban farm on campus and eliminated plastic bags and water bottles, too! If you have any suggestions for these groups or any resources you want to share with the club

FOCL Restoration this Saturday!

Howdy All!

Sorry I didn't get this out to you all sooner but here it is!

This Saturday, February 12^th, Friends of the Colorado Lagoon will be having a Community –Based Restoration from 10-12pm and on the same day they will be having an Estuary Exploration from 12-2pm. Although no officers are able to make it, we encourage you to get out there. This event is open to the public and it's a great way to get involved. So you should go… for more details click here.

On another note, the club will be having monthly Beach Clean-ups every 1^st Saturday of the month and Wetland Restorations every 3^rd Saturday of the month beginning in March.

With that said, our first Beach Clean-Up will be held on Saturday March 5^th and our first Wetland Restoration will be Saturday March 19^th, so plan ahead if you want to participate… more details to come. We will keep you guys updated. Thank you for reading!

Job Openings and Announcements!

Hello Planeteers!

I hope all of you are enjoying the last few days of winter break while it is still here. Before we all go back to school just thought we would through out a few announcements.

Firstly, CSULB has a new Sustainability Task Force, which is a group dedicated to making CSULB a sustainable campus through all sorts of projects, as small as having sustainable project mixers to applying for grants to put solar panels on the pyramid. They are currently looking for sustainable projects for their mixers and design competitions, so if you or someone you know has any kind of project (finished or in progress) that is related to sustainability and wouldn't mind sharing with others, please don't be shy and send me an email.

Secondly, there are a lot of jobs/internships available now all across the board, and we thought we would share those with you. See the attachments and message below for more information.

Last, but certainly not least, our first club meeting will be Tuesday, February 8th, 12:30 - 1:30 PM in USU 305, so mark that on your calendars!

Happy New Year from Greenpeace! As we welcome 2011, the Greenpeace Student Training team has some updates about our program in the new year.

• We have a new name. Formerly the Greenpeace Organizing Term, we have recently changed our name to Greenpeace Semester. The program you have come to know has not changed - we've adopted Greenpeace Semester because we think it explains what we're all about a little bit better: a semester at Greenpeace!

• We have a new website. You may have noticed that the layout for our site has changed a bit. We now have a FAQ page specifically for university faculty.

• We have new summer sessions. The Greenpeace Semester is introducing a five week training offered twice this summer in Washington, DC. This is a great opportunity for students who are unable to take a full semester off of school but still want to receive activist training from Greenpeace.

Many of you have sent announcements, emailed students, hung fliers on your campus, and allowed our staff to come into your classrooms in previous semesters. We really do appreciate your continued support. The Greenpeace Semester is a great opportunity to receive hands-on training that will give you the skills you need to become an environmental leader.

Many students feel they just don't have the skills to rally hundreds of their peers, have a big impact on corporations, or feel they're able to pressure our elected officials. During the Greenpeace Semester, you will learn about current environmental issues and solutions. You'll also be trained by experts in grassroots organizing, leadership, media, and campaign strategy.

Many students receive course credit for the semester through their university, and program staff will work with you to obtain credit.

Beach Clean Up this Saturday!

Howdy All!

First off, I hope you all survived finals…

Second, this Saturday December 14^th we will be having our monthly beach clean up! If you are available, you should come. We will be meeting at the Belmont Pier in Long Beach on the sand at 10:00 AM, and clean until 12ish. I know this is a semi-late notice, but please try to let us know ahead of time via email if you are planning on attending. If you want to carpool, definitely shoot us an email before so you're not left behind.

Trash bags and gloves are provided, so just bring yourself, closed-toed shoes (there are often broken glass bottles in the sand), H₂O, and some friends! Thanks for reading and hope ya'll can make it

Los Cerritos Wetlands Upcoming Habitat Restoration Fun Day

Please excuse the short notice.

And thank you again for all your endless dedication to restore the Los Cerritos Wetlands. And since our program started we have already collected over half of ton of trash and with your help we will continue to restore and clean-up the wetlands, please join us to continue the great work and restore the wetlands. Our program is focused on restoring 67 acres of wetlands currently owned by the Los Cerritos Wetlands Authority. A variety of restorative activities will be conducted within the wetlands. We will also be providing opportunities for service-learning credits at all events.

The Colorado Lagoon Restoration Project is going in front of the Long Beach City Council tomorrow, Tuesday November 16th at 5.30pm. The council will be voting on Phase 2 - the tidal creek that will reconnect the Lagoon to Bay. We need supporters at the meeting, telling the council how important the Colorado Lagoon is and that we have put up with a dirty Lagoon for far too long.

A Special Thanks

To those of you who attended the Green Government Jobs panel discussion yesterday, I thank you for making it such a successful event and commend you for being forward thinking as you approach graduation. I believe that each of us has a calling, and though you may have discovered yesterday that public service is not for you, I am grateful to have helped you narrow it down either way by providing this opportunity. My hope is that you felt inspired by our incredible guests; whether it be just to fierce-ify your resume (both grammatically and experientially), to fight like hell for the highest possible GPA, or to make a positive and lasting impression.

Much like the recipe for the perfect cookie, all of the ingredients need to be in place.

· High GPA: the higher the better. Commit today to raising it as high as mathematically possible. Struggling with a class? Find a tutor and/or set up a study group. When's the last time you visited your professor during office hours? Get in there. Say hello. Let him or her know about your determination to succeed in that class. You'd be amazed how far this can take you. And if the only thing that comes from this is a better letter of recommendation, that's super great too.

· Experience: the more the better. This doesn't include just paid jobs you've worked, it includes volunteer experience, research, membership in organizations/clubs, etc. There are SO many incredible local opportunities for service. Get involved. It'll look great on your resume, but it'll feel even better. This is a big area of interest to me, and I'm happy to be a resource for you.

· Make nice with an English professor: you're going to want your resume proofread. You may be the perfect candidate for the career you've been dreaming of, but poor grammar and spelling may instantly take you out of the running. If you struggle in this area, know that it's very ok to reach out. People enjoy helping those who help themselves, especially when it's appreciated. Send a thank you card. Handwritten cards make a much bigger impression than an email, however, if an email address is all you have, use it. Maybe you'll even email to ask for a physical address.

· Sense of humor and realness: be relatable. While humor is generally not appropriate in a resume, a light twist in the cover letter may work for you. When you're fortunate enough to speak with someone on the phone or in person, a giggle is golden. It's easy to go overboard here, so keep it appropriate and light.

These are just the cookie basics, your sugar, flour, eggs, and butter, so to speak. It's up to you to add the chocolate chips, cranberries, peanut butter, or whatever else will give someone the true taste of who you are. Now that the oven is pre-heated, get to baking!

As a woman nearing 30, it wasn't easy going back to school. I had several careers, some glamorous and some far from, but I hadn't found the one thing that just felt right. Can you imagine looking forward to sitting in traffic on the 405? I do, because it means that I'm either starting or ending a day of enforcing the laws that are in place to protect our fragile ecosystems. I do, because it means that it's another day of doing something that my nephews can be proud of. To me, that's a better benefit than the stellar health plan, vacation time, opportunities for individual development, and yes, even better than the gym membership reimbursement.

Find what drives you and ready the engine. I wish each of you the very best and great success. Please feel free to reach me with any questions you may have.

Hey everyone,

We've got an exciting meeting this week for you all! If you, or a friend, are interested at all in learning about government jobs, this is the meeting for you.

Wednesday, Nov. 10th, 12:30-1:30 PM in USU 305 we will be having guest speaker Ms. Kathrene Hansen, the Executive Director of the Federal Executive Board of Los Angeles, talking about government careers based on environmental science/law, biology, energy, conservation, and wildlife management. She will be guest speaking with her colleague, Melissa Kline who recently helped to draft the hiring reform with the White House Office of Management and Budget.

Our very own EECO Committee Co-Chair, Alli Goldman (ES&P senior) became a Federal Wildlife Inspector with the US Fish & Wildlife Service this past September, with some guidance from this weeks guest speaker, and helped organize this event for the club, and fellow students, to show you all that this amazing opportunity is attainable.

Hike/Tide Pool Exploration at Abalone Cove!

Hey Everyone!

Just a friendly reminder that the Hike is this Sunday on the 7th, just wanted to go over a few things before you attend.

First and foremost, make sure to set your clocks back one hour the night before so that you do not come early to the event,

Secondly there will be carpools set up by the officers, if you have any questions until then, call the President of the CSULB Environmental Club, Nicole at (562) 714-0989.

We will be meeting up at 2pm in Lot 1 off of Beach Drive at CSULB, be sure to arrive on time! If you are not able to make it to the meeting place on time, we will probably arrive at Abalone Cove at 2:45pm, remember that parking will be $5 per car. Since you are going to be visiting some tidepools and basically be near water the whole time, water/tennis shoes are recommended!

NASA DEVELOP Internship Program 2011

Call for Spring and Summer Interns : All degree levels (Bachelor?s, Masters, PhD) are welcome to apply.

DEVELOP is a NASA Science Mission Directorate Applied Sciences Training and Development Program. Students work on earth science research projects, mentored by science advisors from NASA and partner agencies to extend research results to local communities. The projects demonstrate to community leaders and organizations and how NASA science measurements and predictions can be used to address local policy issues.

Past projects include ecological forecasting and study of the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico, natural hazard assessments of Los Angeles earthquakes and fires, air quality monitoring, and coastal wetland and sea level monitoring using remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS).

Interns work in student teams to complete rapid research projects in 10 weeks using NASA remote sensing data and other data sources.

DEVELOP has opportunities nationwide, but we are actively recruiting for spring and summer 2011 interns at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA.

Spring applications must be postmarked by November 15, 2011. Applications are available through our website.

Summer applications must be postmarked by February 28, 2011.

Internships are paid. Rate varies by educational attainment level. Spring students are expected to work approximately 20 hours/week. Spring interns will begin on January 24, 2011.

Summer students are expected to work approximately 35 hours/week. Summer interns will begin on June 6, 2011.

He's one of our own CSULB alumni and is currently the Education Director for FOCL. He'll be talking to us about the wetlands in Long Beach, the new habitat restoration plans for the lagoon, & much much more.

So, join us on Wednesday (Oct 13th) from 12:30-1:30 in USU-305 for FREE pizza, refreshments, & dialogue on the last remaining parcels of undeveloped wetlands in Long Long Beach!

Taylor will also be discussing quarterly (paid) internship opportunities for students in which a few of our alumni have participated in, so this is definitely something you don't want miss out on!

We're working on a campaign to get out the youth vote in the state and to raise awareness about Proposition 23 on this November's ballot (It's campaign is being funded primarily by out of state oil companies and proposes to roll back California's clean air & pollution laws).

This internship would give students an opportunity to learn about grassroots campaigns & environmental campaigns, while gaining valuable skills along the way. Fall internships with CALPIRG!

Overview: CALPIRG's "No on 23″ Campaign is hiring student interns for the fall term. These internships will provide students with invaluable experience in grassroots organizing and advocacy. Internship may focus on one or many areas, including but not limited to: media relations, grassroots campaigning, coalition building, event coordinating, and web & print design.

About the Campaign: CALPIRG takes on powerful interests on behalf of Californians, working to win concrete results for our health and our well-being. This fall we're working Statewide to defeat Proposition 23, the Dirty Energy Proposition. California passed the nations first global warming pollution laws in 2006 which have in turn made our air cleaner and boosted our clean energy economy. Proposition 23 seeks to repeal that law. This would increase the amount of dirty energy California uses, it would damage our clean energy economy, and it would pollute the air we breathe. So we're working to get out the youth vote to let the world know that Californians want clean air and clean energy! We're going to secure 160,000 pledges to vote "No" at over 30 campuses statewide including 9,500 at CSU Long Beach. About the Position: As an intern with CALPIRG's "No on 23″ campaign, you will help CSU Long Beach turn out a record number of voters to the polls this fall and help California continue to be a clean energy leader. We're going to talk to thousands of students, get in the media, and build coalitions so that everywhere student's look, they'll be reminded to vote on Nov. 2 and to vote "No" on 23! You will be part of the state-wide movement to keep California's energy and air clean. These are two month terms and are unpaid.

Intern Responsibilities:
*Work 10 hours per week
*Participate in training workshops to gain skills essential to effective organizing
*Hold a leadership position on the campaign
*Recruit, train, and work with at least 10 volunteers
*Report to the CALPIRG organizer on a weekly basis

You should come participate, if you can, in the State Wide Coastal Clean up day this Saturday September 25th from 9am to noon at the Colorado Lagoon (Directions can be found here: map)

They will need help picking up trash, fixing their beach fence, planting some plants, and more!

Also, for those of you that attended the meeting Wednesday…. it was mentioned there would be two clean-ups…well, unfortunately there won't be. =)

Green Long Beach! Fall Kickoff Mixer

The Green Long Beach! Fall Kickoff Mixer is this Sunday, September 19 from 6:30pm - 10:00pm at the Zephyr Vegetarian Cafe (340 E. 4th st Long Beach, CA)

Come meet and mingle with other members of the Long Beach environmental community.
Green Long Beach! will present its plan for the next year, focusing on four initiatives generated from community feedback. The four initiatives are:

* Community-wide environmental education and outreach
* Building more community gardens and green spaces
* Encouraging green jobs and provide training for green jobs
* Organizing the 3rd annual Green Long Beach! Festival

The mixer will introduce you to other members of the community who share a vision of making Long Beach a greener city, and host public discussions, to collaboratively throughout the year to make that vision a reality.

The mixer will host guest speakers, open discussions, and the opportunity to meet with other eco-friendly residents in in the city. There is NO charge to attend or participate, but donations are appreciated. Light refreshments will be provided.

Green Long Beach! is a grassroots group, bringing together individuals and organizations to promote environmental awareness.

Just wanted to remind you guys about the event this weekend. The Green is Greater Festival is this Saturday (September 18th) from noon to 6 p.m. It will be held at the Gaslamp Restaurant and Bar on PCH (6251 E Pacific Coast Hwy Long Beach, CA 90803).

Come out and support our club along with other Environmental organizations in the community. Enjoy live music, arts and crafts…there will be a kids crafts corner, and fundraiser opportunities for participating organizations. And the best part is, it’s FREE. So, check it out! Hello Club members!

We hope you all are surviving the first couple weeks of the semester. Just wanted to fill you in with some exciting events coming up this week.

First off, we will be having an Eco-Garage Sale Co-op Saturday September 11^th from 8am-3pm(?). We will be accepting donations, so if you are looking to get rid of any lingering "junk" (items) you are encouraged to donate. If you wish, you may give 50% of your earnings to our club (and pocket the other 50%). You may drop off your items at Nicole's house (4208 Clark Ave, Long Beach, CA 90808), preferably before the morning of the garage sale. To arrange a day and time for drop off, please don't hesitate to contact Nicole at nbullum@aim.com or at (562) 714-0989.

If you have nothing to sell, come and support the club by shopping around at the garage sale. And remember, one person's trash can very well be another person's treasure.

Also, our 1^st club meeting will be Wednesday September 15th at 12:30 PM in USU 305. Stop on by to meet our new officers, get info on upcoming events, help welcome our guest speaker (Paul Laris), eat pizza and have fun.

First off I would like to apologize for such late notice because we have decided to reschedule the bonfire due to unforeseen circumstances. We tried to reserve a pit around 1:00pm today but by that time we arrived all the spots for bonfires were already taken by other people at Bolsa Chica. That being said, the officers thought it would be ideal to reschedule the bonfire to a later date, potentially during the semester at some point. Again we all apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you guys and I hope you all enjoy the rest of your Saturday afternoon.

Bonfire this Saturday!

Hello Wonderful Club Members!

Come join us at Bolsa Chica State Beach this Saturday at 5:00 PM for a bonfire. Meet fellow ES&P Club members, eat some good food, and enjoy the beach! The club will be providing veggie dogs, but feel free to bring some snacks/drinks(non-alcoholic only)/s'mores to share if you'd like.

Parking: Parking is $15 in the Bolsa Chica beach parking lot, but is FREE in the parking lot by the Jack in the Box at PCH and Warner Ave.

Pit: Once we reserve a pit, most likely in the early afternoon on Saturday, we will send out another email, letting everyone know which pit we will be at. So check your email before heading off to the beach so you can find us better. Also, email us your cell number if you would rather get a text as soon as we grab a pit.

EECO Committee First Event

Hello Beautiful Club Members!

I trust all had amazing summers. We soon start off another school year and I wanted to fill you in on a potential opportunity for involvement with the Environmental Education and Community Outreach Committee. Alli and I will be attending the training below to help out with the Ballona Wetlands (part of the Santa Monica Bay restoration) open houses. We hope to expand this Env Education opportunity in collaboration with the wetlands as the semester continues. Let me know if you would like to join us. I will arrange for a carpool situation if there are takers:)

Alli and I have also come up with some great ideas for the semester and we are stoked to share them with you and get your ideas:) Our first meeting will most likely take place a couple weeks into the semester, so keep your ears/eyes open for more info. I wanted to let you know about an outreach opportunity at the Ballona Wetlands for you guys to participate in. The SMBRC is looking for student participation in our outreach Open House events to be held monthly at Ballona (open to the public). We will be leading tours (beginning in the Fiji Gateway area in Area A). We are looking for volunteers to assist us developing this program and eventually to continue by leading some of the tours for children, etc.

If you are interested, please attend either our first training session:

Wednesday, August 18^th (0900-1130); and/or our first open house event:

Saturday, August 21^st (0830-1200)

(If you would like to participate, it's important that you try to attend one of these events – preferably the training session). Saturday Beach Clean-up!

Hello ES&P Club Members,

This Saturday, August 14th, is our first club event of summer: the beach clean-up! We will be meeting at the Belmont Pier in Long Beach on the sand at 10:00 AM, and clean until noon or so. Carpools from school will be leaving at 9:30 AM meeting outside of the International House Dorms (near Lot 1 and Belflower Blvd.). Please try to let us know ahead of time via email if you are planning on carpooling with us, so we can get an idea of how many cars we need. If you want to carpool, but are running late please call me at (562)714-0989 so we don't leave you behind!

Trash bags and gloves are provided, so just bring yourself, some closed-toed shoes (there are often broken glass bottles in the sand), your reusable water bottle, and some friends! Don't forget about the Colorado Lagoon event afterward, if you have RSVPed.

Last Events of semester THIS WEEKEND!

I know this is the final stretch of the semester -- so i wanted to give all those who are suffering, a bright shining light at the end of the tunnel. Here are the last club events of the semester:

THIS SATURDAY, May 22nd -- from 10AM-10PM is the GREEN LONG BEACH FESTIVAL! This is a great way to connect with the community that we belong to and also have a lot of fun! There will be lots of bands, guest speakers, and environmental education workshops throughout the entire event. Check out more info about the event: Greenlb.org -- The Environmental Club is listed as one of this year's 2010 festival hosts!

We still need a lot of help during the day of the festival!! So if you have time to volunteer -- please, please, please e-mail glbvolunteer@gmail.com or reply to this e-mail. There will be a special volunteer meeting this friday, May 21st @ 10AM (430 E. 1st Street).

THIS SUNDAY, May 23rd -- is the rescheduled MALIBU BEACH SAFARI event to celebrate public beaches with signwatching, trailblazing the public-private boundary, and a public easement potluck.
Where: Come to the public beach accessway between 22140-22126 Pacific Coast Highway (~.5 mis west of Carbon Canyon Rd. and ~1 mi. east of Malibu pier). Park on either side of the PCH (cross with caution), and walk through the accessway to the beach. (Or take the 534 PCH bus!--nearest stop is Carbon Canyon Rd.-- www.metro.net.) Please allow for plenty of time to find a parking spot, since availability of beach parking is unpredictable.
When: Choose 1 of the 3 start times (each lasts ~1 3/4 hrs). 9am, 11:30pm, and 2pm.

Rangers should arrive at the base of the accessway (on the beach--look for the uniform) to assemble each safari at least 15 minutes in advance of each start time. If you arrive early, you can walk on the wet sand anywhere, and on the dry sand (at least 10 ft. from the houses) on the FIRST 4 PROPERTIES TO THE LEFT (downcoast). Please do not use the dry sand upcoast or elsewhere.
Bring: Snack for the potluck (just for you), water if you need it, sun protection, and extra layer for warmth.
Please note: No bathroom available at meeting point--Try the fast-food restaurants just upcoast on the PCH.

Green Long Beach Festival Volunteers NEEDED!

Hey all you Greenies,

This year's Green Long Beach Festival is right around the corner (May 22nd) -- and we still need a lot of volunteers to help out with the event. This event is designed to bring together the many groups and individuals who work to make Long Beach a more sustainable city. From businesses to non-profits to government entities to community groups, everyone is welcome to be a part of this community event.

We want CSULB and the Environmental Club to be a part of this festival -- so volunteer, invite your friends & family to attend the festival. This is a great way to connect with the community that we belong to and also have a lot of fun! There will be lots of bands, guest speakers, and environmental education workshops throughout the entire event. If you're interested -- I can send you the schedule of events. Pre-Finals Yoga Class (FREE)

Hello ES&P Members,

Back by popular demand is our Pre-Finals Yoga class which is to be held during our regular meeting time on Tuesday between 12:30pm-1:30pm. We all have papers, presentations, and finals coming up and times are stressful and fast paced. So take an hour and relax while getting a great stretch in! Our instructor is Lisa Behrendt who teaches yoga classes through the fitness programs at CSULB. Her method of teaching is balanced, catering to the needs of your body and mind. This class will be geared towards the beginner level so anyone who hasn't done yoga, don't be discouraged. Those of you who have practiced before or are in practice, we encourage you to come and enjoy a relaxing session. Here are the details of the class:

Where: Lawn area outside the lower level of the Union, next to the Beach Auditorium.

When: 12:30-1:30pm. Come a few minutes before if possible to settle in

What to wear: Comfortable clothes to move in

What to bring: Water, sunglasses (we will be outside). Yoga Mats will be provided

Last Official Meeting: Special Presentations

The end of semester is quickly approaching -- and we still have a few more treats for everyone!

This Tuesday, May 4th (12:30-1:30 USU-350) we're having special presentation from all the club officers and committee chairs. AND we'll be announcing the steward award for the semester. This will be the last official club meeting for the semester.

If you are interested in being an officer/committee chair next year, please come to this meeting! The current officers and committee leaders will be giving a short presentation about what each position involves. To be an officer/committee leader next year you need to let us know at this meeting, or by email in the next week or two! The meeting will be short, so that we can answer questions and talk more with those of you interested.

Next week we'll have our traditional pre-finals yoga session! Our meeting room is obviously too small to accommodate a full yoga class -- so we'll be meeting downstairs on the lawn. Specific location will be sent out asap.

Lastly, the month of May is Long Beach's Bicycle month! See the post below for more info.

National Bike Month with a full month of cycling activities. Including CSULBcyclists "ride you wanna be on" -- on Wednesday night, the Long Beach Bike Festival this coming weekend (May 7th-9th), and of course you can stop by the H.U.B bike co-op open Fri-Mon every week. Garden Committee gets meeting with President Alexander!

Hi Everyone,

An Update from the Garden Committee. Tomorrow 5/3 there will be a meeting at 6pm in the Sunset Lounge of USU to discuss a turn of events!... - thanks to Sabrina, we were able to schedule a meeting with CSULB President F King Alexander THIS SEMESTER.

I know the semester is ending fast, but let's try to keep the momentum going. So come to the meeting tomorrow, and we'll talk about when/where and what we'll be presenting to President Alexander.

Hi Everyone,

Again, I really want to thank everyone for participating, volunteering, and getting involved during Earth week. It was a huge help and pleasure seeing all of you guys who came out to celebrate the week with us and generate support for environmental education.

A few important events going on this week:

For our club meeting tomorrow (USU-305 from 12:30-1:30pm), we will be having a special presentation by our very own -- Geoff Leech. He won the Innovator Award for fall09 with the Friends of Colorado Lagoon. He spent the entirety of last semester gathering data on trash in the Colorado Lagoon, and he will be sharing his findings with us. Come listen to the environmental impact of an urban setting on the restoration of the lagoon -- and how you can make a difference in your community! (also -- pizza provided)

This Wednesday, April 28th is LBCC's Earth festival from 11-3pm. They're kicking it off with Aztec Dancers followed by a Drum Circle for the Love of Mother Earth -- featuring organic foods, green vendors, eco-friendly products & alternative energy demonstrations. The event will be held at the Nordic Lounge and Quad/lounge -- and it's open to the entire community. So if anyone has a break -- or a class over at LBCC this wed -- make sure to check it out! (i'm attaching the flier)

The semester isn't over yet -- and we have a few more things planned to keep the momentum going. There's always ways to get involved!
